in Pokémon GO you can see the nine closest pokémon to you, and the footprints under them represent how far away they are, ranging from zero (0) to three (3) footprints. So far there has been some contention on what distance the footprints represent exactly.
Many are going with each footprint being a 100 meter range, so something with three footprints would be between 200 and 300 meters. While many others are saying that is a much smaller distance representing maybe 25 meter increments.
While the majority of the confusion is a result of Niantic remaining quite (as usual when it comes to such gameplay factors), I’m sure some of the differences in opinion is a result of most American’s lack of familiarity with the metric system – with the USA being the initial launch location and having the largest user base for the app.
