Early yesterday morning, Niantic posted to the official Pokemon GO Facebook and Twitter accounts that a special in-game event for Valentine’s Day had been planned, and that it was set to begin that very same day.
The event consists of three major parts: increased candy for transferring, catching, hatching, and walking Pokemon; an increased spawn rate for certain Pokemon (hatch rate for other certain Pokemon); and an increased duration for Lure Modules.
The official announcement states that players will be able to “…double the amount of Candy you’ll earn every time you catch, hatch, and transfer Pokémon. Your Buddy Pokémon is also getting into the Valentine’s Day spirit and will find Candy twice as fast!”
Not only that, but “Chansey, Clefable, and many other adorable pink Pokémon will be encountered more frequently in the wild. Cleffa, Igglybuff, and Smoochum will also be more likely to hatch from Eggs.”
And last but not least, “…to help you paint your town pink this Valentine’s Day, Lure Modules will last for six hours for the entire duration of the event.” Expect to see a lot of pink over the next week!
We should note that while the official announcement only mentioned Chansey and Clefable by name, it has been observed that Jigglypuff, Wigglytuff, Slowpoke, Slowbro, Clefairy, Exeggcute, Lickitung, and even Porygon (!) are all spawning far more frequently than they usually do.
But before you get too excited about catching multiple Chanseys or Porygons during this event, there’s a strong chance that Niantic have simply increased the spawn rate of these Pokemon in their own biomes. Whereas with the Halloween event, they made all of the event Pokemon spawn, well, everywhere.
To put it simply, if Chansey doesn’t normally spawn in your town, this event probably won’t change that. After all, you can multiply 0 by 100 and the result is still going to be 0. Which really does suck for a lot of people.
So, let’s have a quick recap of exactly what this event is all about, shall we? We get double candy from all of the Pokemon that we catch, hatch, transfer, or walk. There’s an increased spawn rate for “adorable pink Pokemon” (and an increased hatch rate for Cleffa, Igglybuff, and Smoochum). And to top it all off, Lure Modules will last for 12 hours instead of 30 minutes.
As per the official announcement, which can be found here, we have until 11:00 A.M. PST on February 15, 2017 to enjoy the event, and then it will be back to business as usual.
What do you think of this event? Is it better than the Halloween event? The Thanksgiving event? How about the Christmas or New Year event? Personally, I like this event a lot, and would put it #3 after Halloween and Thanksgiving. Let me know your thoughts in the comments section below!
